Compass, Deviation, and Variation: How to Nail the USCG Navigation Math

Compass deviation and variation questions trip up more USCG exam candidates than almost anything else. A licensed captain explains the math, the mnemonic, and the exam traps.

Why Compass Math Fails Students

Navigation math questions — specifically compass deviation and variation — are some of the most consistently missed questions on the USCG captain's license exam. Students who understand the concepts in isolation will still get these wrong if they don't have a reliable framework for every question type.

The good news: this is 100% learnable. Once you internalize the mnemonic and understand what each term actually means, these questions become some of the most predictable on the exam. You're not guessing — you're calculating.

The Three Courses You Need to Know

A vessel's heading can be expressed in three different ways, and the exam will use all three. Confusing them is where students lose points.

Compass Course (CC): The direction your compass needle is actually pointing, affected by both variation and deviation. This is what you physically read on the compass aboard the vessel.

Magnetic Course (MC): The direction relative to magnetic north — after deviation has been applied but before variation. This is an intermediate step, not something you can directly observe.

True Course (TC): The direction relative to geographic (true) north — after both deviation and variation have been applied. This is what you plot on a chart.

The exam will give you one and ask for another. Knowing where you're starting and where you're going is step one.

The Mnemonic: Can Dead Men Vote True

Every navigator and every exam prep instructor uses the same mnemonic:

Can Dead Men Vote True

That stands for: Compass → Deviation → Magnetic → Variation → True

This is the order of the conversion chain going from compass to true. Going in this direction (C to T), you're adding easterly errors and subtracting westerly errors.

Going the other direction — True to Compass — you reverse the process: subtract East, add West.

Variation is the angular difference between true north and magnetic north at your location. It's caused by the Earth's magnetic field not aligning perfectly with geographic north. Variation is printed on nautical charts and changes slowly over years. It's the same for every vessel in the same location — it has nothing to do with the boat itself.

Deviation is the angular difference between magnetic north and what your compass actually reads, caused by magnetic influences aboard the vessel itself — engines, electronics, steel fittings. Deviation depends on the vessel and changes with the vessel's heading. It's shown on a deviation table or deviation card specific to your compass installation.

A common exam trap: a question gives you a magnetic course (deviation already applied) and asks for true course. You only apply variation — not deviation again. If a question tells you the magnetic course, deviation is already done. Only apply what's still in the chain.

East Adds, West Subtracts — Going C to T

The rule for applying errors going from Compass to True:

  • East deviation: add to compass to get magnetic
  • West deviation: subtract from compass to get magnetic
  • East variation: add to magnetic to get true
  • West variation: subtract from magnetic to get true

Going True to Compass (the other direction), you reverse: East subtracts, West adds.

A memory trick: EAST ERROR ADD — True to Compass (TVMDC going backwards). Some students remember it as "Timid Virgins Make Dull Company" for True→Variation→Magnetic→Deviation→Compass.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Compass to True
Compass course: 085°
Deviation: 3°E
Variation: 7°W
Find the True course.

Step 1: Compass + East Deviation = Magnetic
085° + 3° = 088°M

Step 2: Magnetic − West Variation = True
088° − 7° = 081°T

True Course: 081°

Example 2: True to Compass
True course: 270°
Variation: 10°E
Deviation: 4°W
Find the Compass course.

Going T to C, East subtracts, West adds:

Step 1: True − East Variation = Magnetic
270° − 10° = 260°M

Step 2: Magnetic + West Deviation = Compass
260° + 4° = 264°C

Compass Course: 264°

Example 3: The Magnetic Course Trap
Magnetic course: 042°
Variation: 5°W
Find the True course.

You're given a magnetic course — deviation is already applied. Do NOT apply deviation again. Only apply variation:

Magnetic − West Variation = True
042° − 5° = 037°T

True Course: 037°

The trap: the exam may also give you a deviation value in the same question. Students who apply it anyway will get the wrong answer. If the question says "magnetic course," deviation is done.

The Exam Patterns to Watch For

Watch for "compass error." Total compass error = deviation + variation (combined). If the exam asks for total compass error and both are East, they add. If one is East and one is West, they partially cancel.

Watch for reciprocal headings. Deviation varies with heading. If a deviation table shows 2°E on heading 090°, it doesn't mean 2°E on heading 270° — it might be 2°W on the reciprocal. Always read the deviation for the heading you're actually on.

Watch the wording. "What is the deviation?" and "What compass heading should you steer?" are asking for different things. Read the question twice before calculating.

Practice Until It's Automatic

Compass math questions appear on every USCG exam. At the REC, you'll be given a calculator and scratch paper — use them. Students who try to do these in their head under time pressure make avoidable errors.
